In a comment to an earlier post, [info]ninjanuns  mentioned skunk spray. I mentioned that the aroma of skunk is not too bad, at a distance. I got to thinking. This is invariably dangerous. Let's play chemistry major, shall we?

The major volatile in skunk spray is (E)-2-buten-1-thiol:

CH3-CH=CH-CH2SH (Pretend that the CH3 is slightly below the CH=CH and the CH2SH is slightly above. It's significant. Really.)

A very similar compound is allyl mercaptan:

CH2=CH-CH2SH

This lovely substance is the major volatile in, of all things...

GARLIC!

No wonder I don't mind skunk!
