In a comment to an earlier post,
ninjanuns mentioned skunk spray. I mentioned that the aroma of skunk is not too bad, at a distance. I got to thinking. This is invariably dangerous. Let's play chemistry major, shall we?
The major volatile in skunk spray is (E)-2-buten-1-thiol:

3-CH=CH-CH
2SH (Pretend that the CH
3 is slightly below the CH=CH and the CH
2SH is slightly above. It's significant. Really.)
A very similar compound is allyl mercaptan:
CH
2=CH-CH
2SH
This lovely substance is the major volatile in, of all things...
